The Department of Financial Services, under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has appointed Shri D Surendran, Chief General Manager of Canara Bank, as Executive Director on the Board of Punjab National Bank (PNB).
His appointment, made under Section 9 (3)(a) of the Banking Companies (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Act, 1970, is effective from the date of assuming office on March 24, 2025, until his superannuation on May 31, 2027, or further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Shri Surendran brings with him a wealth of experience, having served 34 years in various leadership roles across India. A Postgraduate in Agriculture from Annamalai University and a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), he has also completed a Leadership Development Programme for senior executives at the Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru, under the guidance of the Banks Board Bureau.
He began his career as an Agriculture Extension Officer (AEO) with Canara Bank in 1990 and has since held significant positions in multiple states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, New Delhi, and Andhra Pradesh. His expertise spans across areas such as Branch Banking, Priority Credit, MSME, Retail Credit, Recovery, and Human Resources. Notably, he has managed Very Large Branches and Exceptionally Large Branches and also served as General Manager at Karnataka Gramin Bank. Additionally, he headed the Canara Bank Circle Office in Madurai and led the bank’s Human Resources Wing as Chief General Manager, where he played a pivotal role in implementing Project Aarohan-HR Transformation.
His leadership extends to the insurance sector, where he served as a Board Member of Canara HSBC Life Insurance Company Ltd.
