Sensex slides 767 pts, Nifty tests 24,550; IT, metals drop

Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty opened lower today amid concerns over US President Donald Trump's fresh tariffs on steel imports.

That apart, rising Covid-19 cases in the country, selling by FIIs, rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and nervousness ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) monetary policy outcome weighed on the sentiment on Monday.

At 9:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 80684.01 down by -767 points or by -0.94 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24549.75 down by -200.95 points or by -0.81 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 81285.85 and intraday low of 80654.26 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 24717.55 and intraday low of 24538.45

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 1446.70,+1.00%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2368.85,+0.83%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 2998.05,+0.66%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 2267.00,+0.31%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 2402.95,+0.26%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1610.15,-1.67%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1912.90,-1.63%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1548.55,-1.62%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 3499.70,-1.53%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1399.70,-1.49%), among others.

FMCG index was at 20389.75 up by 81.59 points or by 0.4%. Godrej Consumer Products Ltd. (Rs. 1279.00,+3.86%), Gopal Snacks Ltd. (Rs. 353.55,+3.45%), Britannia Industries Ltd. (Rs. 5663.50,+2.78%), Patanjali Foods Ltd. (Rs. 1719.00,+2.70%), Globus Spirits Ltd. (Rs. 967.95,+2.06%),.

_IT index was at 36475.08 down by -418.45 points or by -1.13%. MphasiS Ltd. (Rs. 2449.95,-4.28%), Dynacons Systems & Solutions Ltd. (Rs. 1068.40,-2.13%), D-Link (India) Ltd. (Rs. 473.50,-2.01%), Genesys International Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 728.40,-1.97%), Onward Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 292.30,-1.67%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3453 , shares advanced were 1450 while 1798 shares declined and 205 were unchanged.
