Pre-Session: Gift Nifty signals positive opening for Indian markets

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty50 are likely to open on a positive note today, buoyed by a combination of supportive factors including a US trade court ruling on Trump-era tariffs, Q4 earnings, industrial production data, FOMC minutes, monthly expiry of Nifty50 derivatives, and strong buying activity from both FIIs and DIIs. Positive global cues are also expected to lift investor sentiment.

As of 8:15 AM, GIFT Nifty futures were trading 78 points higher at 24,840, indicating a firm start for domestic equities.

On the macroeconomic front, India’s industrial output posted a moderate rise in April 2025, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) growing 2.7% year-on-year. This marks a slowdown from the 3.94% growth seen in March and falls short of the year-ago level for April, as per data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

On Wednesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 81312.32 down by -239.31 points or by -0.29 % and then NSE Nifty was at 24752.45 down by -73.75 points or by -0.3 %.

On the global front, Nikkei was up 1.16 per cent, while the broader Topix index added 1.11 per cent. Kospi rose 1.07 per cent and ASX200 was up 0.27 per cent.

US futures moved higher following the court’s decision and Nvidia’s upbeat results. S&P 500 futures climbed 1.44 per cent, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.76 per cent, and Dow Jones futures gained 1.15 per cent.

Despite the positive momentum in futures, Wall Street closed lower overnight as investors digested corporate earnings and minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting.

The S&P 500 settled 0.56 per cent lower, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.51 per cent and the Dow Jones slipped 0.58 per cent.
