NHRC launches two-week online internship on human rights for University students

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has commenced its two-week Online Short-Term Internship (OSTI) programme aimed at imparting a comprehensive understanding of human rights protection and promotion in the country. The programme began yesterday, featuring 80 university students selected from 21 States and Union Territories out of a pool of 1,795 applicants representing various academic disciplines.

Addressing the participants, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal emphasized the role of youth as torchbearers of India’s 5,000-year-old civilisational values rooted in empathy, compassion, and justice. He encouraged the interns to act as ambassadors of justice, equality, and dignity, and to use this opportunity to delve into India’s constitutional framework while advocating for human rights.

He highlighted the rationale behind offering the internship online, noting it helps extend access to students from remote areas who may not be able to travel to Delhi. Shri Bharat Lal also provided a broad overview of the evolution of human rights in India, relevant constitutional provisions, the Supreme Court's role, and the cultural legacy of providing refuge to the persecuted.

NHRC Joint Secretary Shri Samir Kumar outlined the internship structure and curriculum, which includes lectures, group research presentations, book reviews, declamation contests, and virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Jail, offering participants real-world insights into human rights issues.

Course coordination is being led by Lt. Col Virender Singh. The programme is tailored to equip students from various disciplines with the knowledge and practical tools needed to address human rights challenges through interactive sessions and activities focused on both international frameworks and India-specific concerns.
