Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is celebrating 29 successful years in India, having been established on May 6, 1996. Since its inception, the company has emerged as one of the most trusted names in the Indian automotive industry. As it enters its 30th year, HMIL remains committed to excellence, innovation, and putting customers at the center of its operations.
Marking the occasion, Mr. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Limited, reflected on the company’s journey. He stated that Hyundai began its operations in India 29 years ago with a vision of shared growth, placing India at the core of global manufacturing and commerce. He emphasized the company’s pride in offering not just smart mobility solutions, but also contributing to a future driven by innovation, sustainability, and deep customer engagement. Guided by its global philosophy of ‘Progress for Humanity,’ HMIL aims to continue transforming products and services while making meaningful contributions to society.
Hyundai’s journey in India began with the groundbreaking of its advanced manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Since then, this facility has become a symbol of manufacturing excellence and played a pivotal role in the company’s expansion. Production officially began in September 1998, with this being Hyundai’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside South Korea.
Over the years, Hyundai has introduced iconic models in India, from the SANTRO and CRETA to the electric IONIQ 5. Today, HMIL stands as a widely recognized household brand and remains dedicated to the country’s development. To meet increasing demand and establish itself further as a global manufacturing hub, the company plans to achieve a cumulative annual production capacity of one million units through the upcoming operationalization of its state-of-the-art Talegaon facility.
Hyundai has also made significant strides in exports, with over 3.7 million vehicles shipped to more than 150 countries. It achieved notable milestones, reaching 0.5 million exports by 2008, 1 million by 2010, 2 million by 2014, 3 million by 2020, and 3.7 million by 2025. Since its inception, HMIL has remained the largest exporter of passenger vehicles from India. In 2024, it contributed 18.5% to Hyundai Motor Company’s global sales volume, ranking among the top three contributors globally. Its Indian plant is also recognized as a benchmark for green manufacturing and smart factory practices.
On the social front, through the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), the company has invested ?400 crore over the past five years, impacting over 2 million lives annually through initiatives focused on the environment, mobility, and community well-being. These programs have generated income benefits of more than ?40 crore, promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods among local communities.
